As seen in the photo below the mall is packed with people early in the morning to witness the swearing in of the new president. The public areas for the viewing are about half a mile from the capital steps and thus you are there mainly to say you were there rather than actually having a view of the swearing in.
The swearing in stand is on the west front of the capital but unless you are in the first section of seating your view is that of a dot unless you have zoom lense capable of seeing the stage.
Of course I was in the first section of people that had tickets from my representative. While not the best location it was a quarter mile closer to the stage than the public so when zooming in I had some decent shots of the actual ceremony and speech.
Again, while we may all be from differing views politically this event is something to see regardless of political persuasion. I am an independent that voted for Obama once but not twice. I also didn't vote for GWB when I saw his inaugural. I go because it is probably the best event to see in DC but of course since we are a political town there really isn't much beyond politics and history to witness in this city.
Although, I will say you do get to see many people from the cable news networks in attendance at the inaugural like Anderson Cooper....
Or even catch a live show of one of the news shows you may watch on TV during the year that are VERY prevalent during the inauguration coverage.
This is an event everyone should witness at least once in their lives. I for one enjoy it regardless of whether I voted for the man being sworn in as president. I mean really...how many places in this world can say they get the privilege of seeing their head of state being sworn into office live and without seeing it on state run television?
